How to budget for a Nigerian wedding
Set the total first, split it by category, keep a contingency, and track every payment against the plan. Here is a split you can start from, with naira examples.
In short: A common Nigerian wedding budget split is about 38% on food and drinks, 20% on venue, decor and rentals, 20% on entertainment and photography, 12% on attire, 5% on stationery and souvenirs and 5% on miscellaneous costs. Agree the total with the couple first, then adjust the split to what matters most to them.
Step 1: agree the total
Start with what the couple and families can spend in total, not with a vendor quote. Ask early whether the traditional and white weddings share one budget or have separate ones; families often split costs between events.
Step 2: split it by category
| Category | Share | ₦2m wedding | ₦5m wedding | ₦10m wedding | ₦20m wedding |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Food and drinks | 38% | ₦760,000 | ₦1,900,000 | ₦3,800,000 | ₦7,600,000 |
| Venue, decor and rentals | 20% | ₦400,000 | ₦1,000,000 | ₦2,000,000 | ₦4,000,000 |
| Entertainment and photography | 20% | ₦400,000 | ₦1,000,000 | ₦2,000,000 | ₦4,000,000 |
| Couple's attire and accessories | 12% | ₦240,000 | ₦600,000 | ₦1,200,000 | ₦2,400,000 |
| Stationery and souvenirs | 5% | ₦100,000 | ₦250,000 | ₦500,000 | ₦1,000,000 |
| Miscellaneous and contingency | 5% | ₦100,000 | ₦250,000 | ₦500,000 | ₦1,000,000 |

Step 3: list every item under each category
Under food and drinks, list the caterer, small chops, cake, drinks and service staff. Under venue, list hall hire, chairs, canopies, generator and cleaning. Itemising is where hidden costs show up.
Step 4: hold back a contingency
Keep 5% to 10% aside for the costs nobody planned: extra guests, transport, a last-minute decor change. If the contingency is never used, the couple is pleased.
Step 5: get quotes and adjust
Ask at least two vendors per category and compare like for like. If catering comes in high, move money from another category rather than quietly growing the total.
Step 6: track every payment against the plan
Record deposits and balances as they are paid. The aim is to spot a category running over while there is still time to talk to the couple. Attend's budget tracker does this per event and alerts you when a category nears its limit.
Traditional and white weddings
If the families are planning a traditional engagement and a white wedding, budget each as its own event. Guest numbers, attire and catering are often very different. How Attend handles traditional weddings.
